Jack Reacher, just like in the books, isn't on a revenge mission. Love this question, so let me be one of those people who thinks everyone else is wrong and I alone understand what you're trying to say. As I recall, Werner Herzog says “you think you’ve won, but by golly you’ll have some explaining to do after all this”…whereupon Jack Reacher closes the door and just kills him, telling the love interest “I just took care of the problem, nbd.”Īre there any other films where the good guy doesn’t go through the whole dance and just unashamedly kills the bad guy as soon as they have the chance? Jack Reacher is the only film I can remember which deliberately bucks this trend. ![]() Blue Ruin kind of does this too, albeit in a very thoughtful way. It even happens at the end of The Departed, by no means a cliched film. ![]() And then the bad guy shows his bad faith and pulls out a gun to try to kill good guy, whereupon the good guy is finally able to justifiably kill bad guy. You’ve all seen the scene: bad guy is finally defeated and is hanging off the cliff edge, lying bleeding on the ground etc etc - and the good guy, despite everything, tries to grab his hand and save him.
